Back at home, Samantha continued to mull over her conversation with Bob. His answers about Darcy made some sense. She supposed it wasnât unusual to do another commission member a favor. However, the speed at which Mark had ingratiated himself enough to be worthy of so many favors seemed astounding. Heâd been in Houston only eight months. Of course, Mark and Bob had known each other in a past life, which could explain the ease with which heâd pushed his way into the Highlands community.
Samantha had started to heat some soup when her cell phone vibrated from within her purse. Sheâd forgotten to turn on the ringer after her conversation with Bob. She had a voice mail message from David. She pressed the button to listen, wondering if there was a new development in the case against Gabby.
âHey, Sam, itâs David. Listen, this may sound strange, but Iâve got a gallery opening at the Blue Eye tonight in Montrose. Anyway ⦠youâve had a lot on your mind lately, I thought maybe you could use a little distraction. It starts at eight PM. I hope you can make it.â
Samantha inhaled sharply. Is this a date? No, heâs just being nice and friendly ⦠or is he?
Her heart pounded a little at the prospect of a date with someone other than Greg. In the grand scheme of a four-year relationship, they hadnât been broken up for long, and if she was honest with herself, there were still plenty of unresolved emotions there. On the one hand, an outing with David sounded potentially awkward, but on the other hand â¦
A part of her that hadnât been engaged in quite some time enjoyed the brief tingle of possibility.
Am I overthinking this? Iâm sure he wouldnât consider this a date. He feels sorry for me.
Samantha had half convinced herself not to go when she noticed the newspaper sheâd left on her kitchen table this morning. Curious, she flipped to the entertainment section and found the gallery opening listed on todayâs calendar.
The blurb said the opening would feature some of Davidâs earlier works and some of his latest.
I like his artwork. Thereâs no reason I shouldnât go. Iâll do it.
She ate her soup and dug around in her closet for an outfit that could fit both the date and casual-outing scenarios. She decided on a green sundress with scalloped lace and pockets and, for good measure, added a gold wrap and gold sandals. After applying makeup and brushing her hair, she decided she looked good enough. She patted Ruby, asleep on the sofa, for good luck and headed outside.
When she arrived, the gallery already teemed with people. She grabbed a glass of wine and wandered through the rooms. Though the style and technique were the same, each painting looked different from the last. She enjoyed eavesdropping on others as they told their companions what they noticed in the artwork. Where one pictured a dog with a cane, another saw a man playing an upright bass.
